Microsoft unveiled its Live Mesh synchronization system which allows files and folders to be shared and synchronized across multiple devices. Live Mesh is actually a software-plus-service platform that connects devices (PCs, and soon Mac and mobile phones) through the internet, making file sharing and folder synchronization a lot easier.

“Live Mesh enables your devices to work together and allows you to add and sync files and folders across your mesh of devices,” said Amit Mital, General Manager of Live Mesh.

The software is called Mesh Operating Environment and is only available for Windows XP and Windows Vista, with planned support for both Mac OS X and Windows Mobile. There is also a piece of software which can be used to remotely connect and manage to any of the devices in a synchronization relationship, called Live Mesh Remote Desktop.

Mital further explained: “With Live Mesh, your experience starts by adding devices to your personal “device mesh” and making them aware so they work together. This is what “software-plus-services” is all about, devices, software and services working together, on your behalf.”

At first, the service will be available to a limited amount of users, in order to get the necessary feedback and to make sure the system is reliable and responsive. At the same time, the interface will be in English only, as the data center hosting service is in United States (broader availability is expected within a few months). Although only supported on Windows XP and Vista machines, support for the Mac and mobile devices will be added.

The service includes a cloud storage component, called Live Desktop. Through Live Desktop, synchronized folders can be accessed through a special website.

The announcement marks another step in the direction of web-oriented software. Earlier this month, Microsoft has launched the long-rumored beta of a subscription service to an all-in-one software suite, which combines Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, Office Live Workspace, Windows Live OneCare, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Messenger, and Windows Live Photo Gallery. Codenamed Albany, the new offering is a direct take on Google Docs.
