Astros Beat Marlins 5-1

new31.jpgHOUSTON (AP) — Wandy Rodriguez pitched well again at Minute Maid Park, and J.R. Towles and Michael Bourn homered to lead the Houston Astros over the Florida Marlins 5-1 on Sunday.

Lance Berkman added an RBI double for the Astros, who’ve won two in a row for the first time this season.

Rodriguez (1-0) struck out seven and allowed five hits in seven strong innings. A week ago, he pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings at home against St. Louis, but didn’t get a decision in the Astros’ 5-3 victory.

Last year, Rodriguez had a 2.94 ERA at Minute Maid Park and the Astros won 11 of the 15 games he started here.

Josh Willingham hit a solo homer for the Marlins.

Florida’s Burke Badenhop (0-1), making his first major league start, allowed seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk. The 25-year-old Badenhop came to Florida in the deal that sent Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to Detroit.

Darin Erstad got Houston going with a double to right-center in the second inning. Towles followed with a homer to left, his third of the season.

Bourn led off the third with a homer to right, his first of the season and second of his career. The Astros led Florida 3-0 for the third straight game.

Willingham opened the fourth inning with a homer onto the railroad tracks in left field. The Astros had runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Towles grounded into a double play.

Badenhop lasted until the Astros loaded the bases with none out in the sixth. Berkman led off with a walk, Carlos Lee singled and Miguel Tejada beat out an infield hit before Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez brought in left-hander Taylor Tankersley.

Tankersley got Geoff Blum and Jose Cruz Jr. to pop out, before Gonzalez brought in Lee Gardner to face Towles. Gardner missed a 3-2 pitch inside and Towles walked to give the Astros a 4-1 lead.

Rodriguez batted next and grounded out, but he didn’t need to help himself with his bat.

The left-hander shut down the Marlins after Willingham’s drive, striking out four of the next seven batters he faced. He retired nine in a row before Cody Ross singled leading off the seventh. Rodriguez got the next two Marlins on fly outs, then ended his day by striking out pinch-hitter Robert Andino.

Bourn and Mark Loretta singled off Florida reliever Matt Lindstrom in the Houston seventh. Berkman then doubled off the bullpen fence in left-center to score Bourn and put Houston up 5-1. Berkman has four doubles and seven RBIs in his last six games.

Doug Brocail pitched a scoreless eighth and Jose Valverde shut out Florida in the ninth as the Astros won a series for the first time this season.
