Batman to take on Al Qaeda baddies
Move over FBI and Homeland Security agents. Batman’s here to make your job easy, at least as far as Osama bin Laden is concerned. Batman writer Frank Miller is coming up with a new graphic novel, called Holy Terror Batman!, to help the superhero beat up Al Qaeda baddies who will target Gotham City.
Calling the novel a ‘piece of propaganda’, Miller said, “Batman kicks Al Qaeda’s ass.” According to the writer, the inspiration was “an explosion from my gut reaction of what’s happening now?. “It just seems silly to chase around the Riddler when you’ve got Al Qaeda out there. (The novel is) a reminder to people who seem to have forgotten who we’re up against,? he said.
Miller, who wrote Batman’s comeback novel Dark Knight Returns, has already finished 120 pages of the novel that might run into about 200 pages. The writer said that since it is an outlet for his anger with the 9/11 attacks, the novel is ‘emotionally raw’. “Imagine the powerful rage when someone crosses the passion between a man and a woman or a man and his city,? he said.
According to Miller, superheroes have served greater purpose than just entertainment in the past and would continue to do so. “Superman punched out Hitler (in the 1930s). So did Captain America (in 1941). That’s one of the things they’re there for. These are our folk heroes,? he said.
The visual style of the book will be more graphic than Miller’s previous works. “Be afraid. I think it’s some of the best artwork I’ve ever done. Gotham City comes under attack, so it involves a lot more industrial landscapes than I’ve done in years,? he said.
Miller, who reinvented Batman in 1987, is credited with the superhero’s revival, which led to a number of films being released about the caped crusader’s escapades, the latest being Batman Begins. He is also the author of Sin City and Daredevil novels both of which have been made into films.
The publication date and other details about Holy Terror Batman! are not clear.
