US director Laurie Collyer has won the top prize at the 41st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic.Collyer took the Crystal Globe best picture award for Sherrybaby, the tale of a drug addict’s relationship with her daughter.

Maggie Gyllenhaal won the best actress prize for her role in the film.

Norwegian film maker Joachim Trier won the best director Crystal Globe award for his film Reprise.

Jury prizes

Other winners included Austrian Andreas Horvath, who won the short documentary award for Views of a Retired Night Porter, and Andrzej Hudziak who took the best actor award for Several People, Little Time.

The nine-day festival attracted more than 1,500 film professionals and journalists from around the world.

The seven-strong Grand Jury panel - chaired by Goran Paskaljevic - also awarded special jury prizes to the films Christmas Tree Upside Down and Beauty in Trouble.

Awards in the over 30-minute documentary category went to Life in Loops (A Megacities RMX) by Timo Novotny, who collected the prize in person, and to the Mexican film In the Pit.

Prizes for outstanding contribution to world cinema went to US actor Andy Garcia, producer Robert Shaye and Czech director Jan Nemec.

The festival offered 230 films and documentaries.
