All the King’s Men starring Sean Penn and Jude Law will receive its world premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, organisers have announced.The film, which also stars Mark Ruffalo and Kate Winslet, tells of a popular US politician mired in corruption.

Susan Sarandon, Ralph Fiennes and Ed Harris also have films at the event, which runs from 7 to 16 September.

The annual movie showcase, one of the largest in North America, celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.

Directed by Steven Zaillian, the Oscar-winning writer of Schindler’s List, All the King’s Men is based on a book by Robert Penn Warren that was previously filmed in 1948.

Willie Stark, the character played by Broderick Crawford in the original film and Sean Penn in the remake, was partly inspired by the notorious Louisiana governor Huey P Long.

Cannes winner

As previously announced, 2006’s event will open with The Journals of Knud Rasmussen, which examines the history of Inuit people in Canada.

Ken Loach’s Irish drama The Wind that Shakes the Barley, which won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, will also be screened.

Sarandon and Fiennes can be seen at Toronto in Bernard and Doris, the story of a billionaire tobacco governess who leaves her vast fortune to her gay Irish butler.

Harris, meanwhile, plays the title role in Copying Beethoven, which deals with the composer’s stormy relationship with a promising young music student.

Also in the line-up is The Pleasure of Your Company, a comic love story starring Jason Biggs from the American Pie films and Wedding Crashers actress Isla Fisher.
